Spain is in the south west of Europe and covers over half
a million sq km, the vast majority of which are in the Iberian
Peninsula, the remainder being in the Balearic Islands, Canary
Islands and a couple of Spanish enclaves in Northern Africa.
The Costa del Sol is located in the far south of Spain in
the Andalucia region and benefits from a dry Mediterranean
climate with hot summers and mild winters. The weather inland
from the coast is more extreme, being hotter in the summer
and colder in the winter. In the Sierra Nevada mountains snow
is found almost all year round above 3000m.
Rainfall is highest in the winter months but there is little
rain between June and September. Western Andalucia is wetter
than Eastern Andalucia thanks to the prevailing winds from
the Atlantic Ocean.
